They pledged 100% clean energy by 2030. Now they’re quietly walking it back.
In 2020, Google promised to lead the way on climate action. The company committed to running every office, server, and data center on 100% carbon-free energy — 24/7, everywhere — by 2030. It was a massive step forward, one that could set a global standard for the entire tech industry.
But now that promise is in jeopardy.
With artificial intelligence driving explosive growth in Google’s energy-hungry data centers, the company is retreating from its climate commitments. Instead of doubling down on clean power, Google is leaning more on fossil fuels. To make matters worse, one of the company’s top executives recently praised the Trump administration’s climate denial as “fantastic.” That’s not leadership. That’s a red flag.
This is a pivotal moment. Google is one of the most powerful and influential companies on Earth. If it follows through on its 2030 clean energy pledge, it can force the entire tech sector to do better. But if it turns its back on that commitment, it opens the door for Big Tech to slide back into business as usual—pollution, secrecy, and zero accountability.
We can’t let that happen.
Public pressure helped push Google to make its original climate pledge. It’s time to raise our voices again — louder than ever. The company hasn’t entirely abandoned its 2030 target, but the backsliding has already begun. If we don’t act now, we may lose this chance for good.
Tell Google: recommit to 100% carbon-free energy by 2030. No excuses. No climate denial. No corporate spin. Just action.
This could be our last chance to hold Google to its word — and push tech giants to put people and the planet first.
Thanks,
Mary
