They’re Coming for Borrowers Again

The student debt crisis is about to get worse—unless we act now.

Student loan collections are roaring back. After a three-year pause, the government is set to restart wage garnishments and tax refund seizures for millions of borrowers—some as soon as this fall.

More than 7.5 million people are already in default. Many are older Americans living on Social Security. Others are still struggling to recover from the pandemic. The system is cruel, confusing, and built to profit off people trying to build a better life.

This is about justice—and progressives must speak out.

We’ve seen what public pressure can do. During the pandemic, collective outrage paused interest and payments. We need that same momentum now to stop harmful collections, expand relief programs like Fresh Start, and fix this broken system for good.

Urgency matters. Collections could resume in just a few months. Every voice counts.

Thanks,
Mary
