Trump’s Plan to Kill Nonprofits Is Moving Fast—We Have Days to Stop It
A new GOP tax bill gives Donald Trump exactly what he wants: the power to shut down nonprofits he doesn’t like.
Buried in the legislation is a provision already called the “Nonprofit-Killer Amendment.” It would let the president direct the IRS to strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status—no due process, no oversight, just political revenge dressed up as “anti-terrorism.”
If it passes, Trump could dismantle climate justice groups, reproductive rights advocates, racial justice orgs—anyone who dares to oppose him. And it wouldn’t stop with Trump. Any future president could abuse this power.
This isn’t about taxes. It’s about silencing dissent.
We’ve stopped attacks like this before. Last year, public outrage helped kill a similar provision in the Senate. But now the House is moving fast—and the vote could happen any day.
The National Council of Nonprofits is sounding the alarm: this would give “unprecedented authority to the Executive Branch to revoke tax-exempt status from charitable nonprofits without due process or basic protections.”
We can’t let that happen.
Thanks,
Mary
