We must abolish ICE

After the killings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti during ICE operations in Minneapolis, calls to abolish ICE are accelerating nationwide — and the moment is urgent.

According to Truthout and a press release from National Nurses United, the nation’s largest nurses’ union is now demanding the abolition of ICE, arguing that militarized immigration enforcement is incompatible with public health and community safety.

The Hill reports that criticism is also coming from unexpected places, including the Libertarian Party, which has condemned ICE’s expanding power and lack of accountability. In Congress, Rep. Ayanna Pressley voted against a DHS funding bill and renewed her call to abolish ICE, according to her January 22 statement. The 19th reports that progressive lawmakers and organizers are now pushing clearer, more forceful abolition messaging in response to these killings.

ICE is not inevitable. It was created only 23 years ago, in 2003, and its continued existence is a political choice. The deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti have made clear what many have warned for years: this agency is dangerous by design.

Momentum is building fast — but it will not last without pressure.

Thanks,
Mary
